I always love the miniatures, the apprentice maitrise, or doll furniture of a century ago. This one was found in France, and I suspect it is a maitrise - the 'test' scale furniture a student or apprentice to the Master eboniste (furniture maker) creates at intervals as a way to show their level of increasing capability in the art. One of a kind pieces, this one would show a student's ability to create lathed posts as well as the chair in full. It remains as charming and fine as when created. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the spoke side chair is sturdy and well made. The seat upholstery seems like silk but I'm unsure and didn't do a burn test. It is woven and has a Griffen or phoenix head and neck rising into the floral. Very Napoleon III, c.1850-70s. Photos show it from all angles.
