Oh, his portrait has such an Impressionist feel to it, and yet his clothing and hair place him in an earlier time, c.1810-30s. The oil painting is done on a small oval of pressed cotton rag paper, thick and well-lodged in its place we we didn't remove it for fear of damaging the old painting. Because it is an oil painting, it does not have nor need a glass cover. The frame also dates it to early 1800s and shows it well. Measurements are noted on our photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, most miniatures are painted in gouache on thin natural wafer, but this one is oil paint on a tightly compressed 100% cotton rag handmade paper, thick. Frame is wood, mat is brass, and all present with age and presence! Alas, not signed by the very accomplished artist. And we have no identification for this distinguished gentleman, either. Just a ghost of the past.
