The TAHAN engrave lock plate - something all us antique dealers look for. TAHAN was one of the very top eschaton of ebenistes, then purveyors of luxury goods in 19th century Paris. That engraved nameplate on a box can double the value. Not all TAHAN goods bear the mark. But all bear the precision, the high-end aesthetic and finest workmanship. This one is heavy, yet is cut-away and reveals a velvet inner lining.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. No dents. The old lock looks to be a working lock, but we have no key for it at listing. The silk velvet is really still beautiful inside, and while a very close inspection shows that showing through the openwork to be old, it still looks so beautiful. A small Sevres porcelain plaque (this is typical of a lot of TAHAN boxes) remains undamaged as cartouche. Very pretty old thing, c.1850s, just in from Paris. Measurements are noted on photos, but it is 5 1/4" long 2 3/8" wide and 3" tall plus handle which is hinged.
