A lovely mid-1800s gilded frame, wood with gesso appliqué in full, but some other evidence of restoration. Housed within is the most charming young French fisherman. He has his baskets of small fish, sardines perhaps or anchovies. Proudly posed in a side alley that gives the little painting so much personality. A walk in the old streets of some village in France, Italy, Spain or Portugal. Iâve made a scan so you can see the detail of the painting, but the color is more accurately conveyed in the photographs of it in the frame. The painting was rather loosely within the frame and we've added side filets to brace it better. All you need is a hanging wire to your choosing on back, and he's on the wall. Lovely subject, nicely done and frame has the feel of the alley, too.
Very good for age and type. The painting is actually excellent. Painted on a wood board, it has no tear issues, no lost paint. Perfectly preserved, really. The frame has its issues of age and use, and has some touchups to the old gold surface that seem to me to distract in the photos but not much on the wall, when hung. At 15" x 11" or so, it's also perfect for a bookshelf painting, or even kitchen counter or bar. You know the look, right?
