Large as these go, this magnificent painting on thin semi-transparent wafer is an early to mid-1800s Grand Tour souvenir created after a full-sized painting, or certainly with the theme and style of one by French Romanticism artists of the 1700s: Boucher, Fragonard, others. That Louis XV and XVI period celebrated romance, opulence, trysts, and the "naughty" aspects of the French court and did so beautifully. This one is splendid in its amazing attention to detail, and rises to a work of art all on its own. Remember that wafer is only 5 7/8" tall and 4" wide. The .25" face of the tiger rug is superb, as are the even tinier faces of the two lovers, and each one holds a champagne flute, the bottle cooling there to right of frame. Entirely hand painted, our artist ha signed the work in white in center lower part of the painting.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. My only disappointment in this one, actually makes it display very well, but I wish someone had left the very old woven silk fabric on the mat and the backing cover. Each have been replaced by mat board. Certainly it looks clean and tidy, but I would have preferred even slightly tattered and old and original. That mentioned, there is no damage to the painting. The slightly convex original cover glass and that stunning frame are all intact. RARE full interior miniature painting, opulently accomplished. The frame is 8" tall, plus the cross-torches and garland, bow, and it is 6.5" wide, easel and hanging loop remain intact on back, as well. A superb display, investment piece.
