Stunning and large hand carved jardiniere, French carving but would also accent a Black Forest decor, collection. The 4 sides are carved separately and mitered so they join at the corners. The depth and weight of the heavy old forest growth hardwood began 1 3" depth, and the carving or sculpture cutting away to reveal deep bas relief which is varied on all sides but cohesive based on style, form and the sweeping acanthus-like lets and upper rim. The old original zinc liner is not only still with the outer furniture form, it is also fully intact without holes or deterioration which means it hasn't a single leaking spot. Yes, you could plant directly in the zinc if you wanted to, but I'd still advise potted plants. I see it as a centerpiece on a large table, holding several potted orchids - wouldn't it be fabulous! It is large. Plan on many compliments! Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Lots of photos from all angles of view - gorgeous old thing! Mid-late 1800s, it has been very well treasured and there are no sun faded sides, no real loss or damage. Mitered corners on each of the 5 opulently carved sides, they're joined as a rectangular furniture frame for the inner plantable zinc lining. No holes or leaks. It has lime or hard water accumulations, but we've washed it thoroughly, and we've confirmed it definitely has no leaks - will hold water should you wish to plant directly in it. Most of the old ones have deteriorated or split zinc liners. I'd still plant it with pots, and fill the top in with sphagnum moss to fill in gaps, though. There are no cracks or chips - perhaps a tip of a leaf - you look it over carefully. No warp. No odors. Just a gorgeous piece! Heavy!
