Splendid 19th century hand carved French Gothic to Neoclassical figures of griffen, gargoyle-like, they have been used as brackets or part of carved furniture, and date early 1800s or earlier. For some time they've been in use in France as brackets holding a curtain rod and curtains in a Paris apartment. Charming pair, the winged figures are at once boding and also charming. Beautifully carved, they have enough imperfection to make them just feel right! I have noted any flaws with 'x' on the photos. Taken in total, the appeal tallies far higher. BIG! These are 17 1/2" depth to the wall, and the beveled plaques with hardware hanging apparatus at 16 1/2" long - impressive in place! I know these will not be with me long enough to figure out where to hang them.
Very good condition for age and type, there are flaws which are marks of age of the wood, and also of use and the slender carved wings (tips each have a chip). I've marked all flaws with an 'x' so you will see them rather than just being the charm of the entire carving pair. Yes, it is a matching pair and they will stay together. Heavy solid old forest growth wood. I think it's oak, isn't it? Your house or mine is the only question. Just in from France. The old wood finish is gorgeous!
