Larger than most at 4 3/8" x 3 7/8", this stunning painting presents a young woman from c. 1750-70s, the time of French King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette. It is, of course, likely this unidentified young woman, who shows the informal dress popularized in Courtier's lives by M-A, and conjures visions of leisure gatherings at the Petit Trianon on the grounds of Versailles. There is no signature, which is a bit confounding when you consider what an adept artist has done in this portrait. When I can blow up a miniature to fill your screen and the detail is superb and holds, the personality and finest details of a face just 1/2" from chin to hairline seems too impossible. Isn't she wonderful!  Not a care in the world. Well before The Terror (beheadings), and Napoleon not yet even born. If only we knew her story. If by chance you recognize this woman from other paintings, perhaps by Vigee LeBrun and circle, Versailles, do email. Thanks!

Very good to excellent for age and type. Protected and treasured these centuries since beneath the original convex cover glass, I have no flaws at all to report. She is backed by the original foil, which reflects light through the very thin wafer and brings her to life, almost. The heavy dore bronze frame is beautifully crafted, as well. A museum piece, from "The French School" of painters, c.1750-1770s.
