Superb 23 3/4" tall hand crafted French side bar or hutch, the scale design and construction of a 19th century French apprentice's level of expertise. Working with a Master cabinetry maker (ebaniste, ebeniste), these miniature furniture items were created as a means to test the level of mastery achieved at various stages in a long apprenticeship. They remain today as one-of-a-kind creations, and are quite remarkable in the fine detail - everything from hardware to carvings and the basic design the work of a student/apprentice. I've always been drawn to them, and have had some true masterpieces. Usually it will be Bru or antique doll collectors who buy these. Some bring double or higher the prices of full-sized furniture, owing to the rarity. This one is, all in all, just superb. I would date it mid-1800s. Entirely hand carved and lathe work is precision. Working lock has the original key, and will lock upper and lower cabinets. For me, I just love these atop a side table or dresser. They're works of art in their own category. This is one we recently found in France. It won't last long in our shop. Don't miss it! Full measurements noted on the photos.
