Women's art. Women's work: crochet and laces made with the variable hook crochet tambour as you see it here. The sections are threaded and hollow and it stores its own variation of hooks within, to be mounted at the end and tightened in with the little cog pin that is seen at the side. These were usually a tool in a larger grouping of sewing and vanity items, fitted to the interior of a grand sewing box, or travel vanity case. Most often these cases were Palais Royal boutique vendor's wares, offered up c.1700s to 1840s from the finest makers and shops, to the elite of the world, from the Palais Royal. Cardinal Richelieu's former Palace, and a place of commerce, theatre, culture - finest wares sold in the boutiques that lined the promenade of the center enclosed gardens. This is just one, 18k gold fitted ivory handle, case We have several to offer, and each sold separately so look for all. YOU ARE BUYING ONLY 1 TAMBOUR, don't be confused by 3 photos of it in 1 panel - it is long and slender, our photo allowance is square. Group images show it with others in the final 2 images, just to show comparables from our collections, for ambiance.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, and entirely complete. It has the crochet tip within as you see in our images, and the end unscrews and turns around to self-encase the hook within the handle.  There might seem to be something missing there - the tiny screw-in mount cog used to keep the crochet hook in place (these were interchangeable with various sizes, though here we have just the one you see installed). The installed hook is stable, will not come out, seems permanently mounted. Ready to use or display. No chips, cracks. Fabulous old one, c.1810-30. French.

The vast majority of worked and antique object tortoise shell material comes from the shells of two species of sea turtles: the hawksbill (Eretmo-chelys imbricata) and, more rarely, the green turtle (see box A). The shells of these turtles exhibit attractive patterns that normally consist of light to dark brown patches, though a homogeneous “cream”-colored variety called blond tortoise shell also exists. We (and all but DNA test experts) are unable to distinguish between Asian and African elephant ivory, and c.1400-1800s trade routes bringing same into Europe sourced both.

IMPORTANT NOTE regarding antique tortoise shell or ivory: We are great supporters of protection for endangered species in our modern world. We never buy or sell anything 100 years or newer; we donate to anti-poaching organizations; we don't hunt; we conserve in ways that impact global warming (we're totally solar at home), knowing those measures also protect the animals in the wild today. We also recognize the vast cultural history we preserve with our care and reverence for these antique objects, and agree with CITES that objects over 100 years of age have nothing whatsoever to do with species depletion in our current world. We do hold a USDFW import/export license, as well.

Our offering exceeds the age limitation of "more than 100 years of age", and is well within the exemption for CITES regulation. If imported, met the CITES regulation. This item will be handled and shipped from our Utah business, and is not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, NY, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington if it contains ivory, sorry. Please see our small print for more details.
