Interesting antique French hallmarked sterling silver menu or carte d'visits photo placard/holder with ornate engraved decoration, turned genuine ivory handle and "ON" monogram! Okay, this one is a complete mystery to me so if any of you viewers out there know its original purpose, please email! About the size of a vanity or hand mirror but the rectangular sterling portion has a very thin slit at the top for the insertion of something... A chauffeur perhaps with a card showing the name of the client they're looking for?? In any event, it's marked with the French Mercure or Mercury hallmark designating it was meant to be exported, the tiny number "1" within that mark means it's in .950 silver (95% pure and above the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). The silversmith mark is for Auguste Louis Fizaine, Paris circa 1858-1879.
Very good to excellent condition. There is a very slight bend near the bottom right corner of the sterling panel and a small dimple in the silver portion of the handle. See images for all measurements.
