WOW, what a beautiful and rare old casket, the first of its kind that we've had the pleasure to offer! Gorgeous rosewood veneers with sleek brass string or strip inlays, boulle medallions on the two front doors and top drop-down cabinet door. Behind that top door is an opulent little setting, a mirror in the back with lovely silk drapes, a space below for a scent or perfume bottle and fittings in the door itself for sewing items. Only an old pair of scissors remain, the fittings would also hold a thimble, needle case and bodkin. There's even a velvet pin cushion in the front, lovely! Just in from France and rare, rare, rare. These miniature pieces are highly collectible, wonderful decorative accents in an opulent doll house setting but they're also fabulous as the Napoleon III era sewing pieces that they are. Likely a Palais Royal piece, the style very distinct, very rare and as opulent as they come. I'd not have been surprised if it was a marked Tahan, Vervelle, or Sormani work. The finest! Unfortunate that it's missing most of its sewing implements but, alas, the box itself is exquisite! A magnificent antique casket whether you're a doll or sewing enthusiast, don't miss it!

Very good to excellent condition. As noted, only the scissors remain inside, missing the perfume and other sewing items. A slight bit of soiling to the fabric around the scent bottle fitting. And a project if you want to search out the proper interior tools to finish this exceptionally fine c.1750-80s chatelaine vanity case, etui. The green covering is, of course, the finest belly leather of the stingray. The fittings and cartouche test 18k gold and elevate the museum quality case, as well. The top bale means this one would have once hung from an elaborate 18k gold chatelaine, which sets it apart a bit from the usual vest pocket necessaire. Sadly, it has come to us from France without a single interior fitted tool. Just the openings into which you would have placed them. It is obvious it would have held a pocket knife, a pencil, a small note pad likely and also a measurement tool. This fitted inset helps us visualize this as the necessaire of a gentleman who navigated, or designed, or was architect or military officer or Royal, as it's a writer's fitting. The folding knife would have been to cut a quill for the small pen, I think. Isn't it just exceptional. The interior fittings are not 18k gold. Only those outside and the lip of the top and bottom. Still, look how perfectly preserved it has been for these 250 years.

Very good to excellent as you see it, though it lacks the interior tools. Still a superb display etui. I collect these, and it's very rare to find a complete and well preserved shagreen (galuchat is the French word) necessaire. This one hasn't really much disruption at all to the fine stingray belly leather that covers the body of it so perfectly. A work of art, this. And while there is part of the one appliqué of 18k gold missing (see photos of the top half), it really doesn't distract from the overall beauty or importance. Just a bit from the price. One might even wish to have that appliqué re-cast. Such is the importance of this one. If I were younger, I'd take on the project of finding the fittings that will fill it out. Alas, you will need to do it yourself. Such fun, those projects. Get yourself to Paris markets and enjoy! These face screens were very popular in the Victorian era, particularly, where they must have been in every well-appointed home in numbers, pairs always, and were there to give to visitors to hold against the blushing heat of the fireplace as they sat and visited or listened to music or similar. Usually seated closer to the warmth, ladies had to protect their pale cheeks from the blush of a direct fireplace. These are wonderful hung as art, by the way, either in frame or just as you see it. The turned wood handles have been painted with a nice gilt which remains beautiful. While you note the age there, as you can see, they still remain lovely and would be great protected within a frame. These still have a wrist strap and one the fragment of the original tassel. This one is a rare matching pair (rare to find them still in the matching pairs, but we do have some others available, just ask). The screens and handles are in very good condition for age and type, quite rare to find without more damage. Whether you frame and hang them, or rest them on the mantel or on a fireside table, you'll love the decorative quality of these Victorian screens. A 'must' for any fine Victorian home, these decorated hand screens were made available for guests who gathered for evenings of socializing, music, conversation, and were specifically designed to allow a lady to sit close to the warming fire, but not end up with red blotches on her face from the fire's heat. You know that the makeup a lady wore in those days would have been wax based, and one always ran the risk of it melting and running, as well, so you can plainly see how vital these were to any host or hostess who expected to regain the company of their visitors.

Very good condition throughout, with no holes or splits in the old canvas which is almost always found on the needleworked ones, a flaw as typical for these old fabric screens. No chips or cracks or breaks in the handles, also unusual. The handles are firmly affixed, strong. This is a pair screens you could proudly use as the Victorians did, though remember that needlework and beadwork on canvas is fragile, so perhaps best framed and hang or displayed as decorative accent in your home. One or two beads missing on hte one, I see, and fairly even darkening from time, no serious stains. These go fabulously with frame or without, hung flanking your fireplace mirror or painting, by the way, and are superb for Country French, English Country Manor, traditional or just about any decor. A very Victorian item, face screens, and difficult to find in the fine condition you see here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0298/3392/0556/products/32_8970f706-e59a-4397-9707-ec5f2fc76d02.jpg?v=1580323195
pair-2-antique-french-sterling-silver-cut-glass-flasks-liqueur-or-cologne
Pair (2) Antique French Sterling Silver & Cut Glass Flasks, Liqueur or Cologne

Oddly, I don't find a maker mark or French control mark on the caps, but they are sterling silver with a gold wash on the neck/collar. The wood of this box begs to be touched - it's fine furniture. The crystal jars are all in fine condition, no breaks. It's there on the inner lip of the bottom half, where it closed into the upper hinged top portion, and it's a small profile mark that guarantees it as a .800/1000 purity of silver, made in France between 1818-1838. It is in the earlier style favored by Marie-Antoinette, and developed by the brothers Martin, which was a method of layering paint and varnish to get a depth of image and for decorative objects like this one. Your visit to Versailles might have been your first experience with such decorative style, and it's there en masse in the rooms mid-late 1700s, from large wall panels to small vanity items. The style has come to be known as Vernis Martin. The eventual darkening of the varnish usually has given this vibrantly colorful painting style a warmth in yellowing and you can see that result in this lovely small item. The outer wrapping is probably leather, most likely fine shagreen (skin of sting ray) based on the age of this one. And it is the leather that holds the painting. The item is an etui (small case) or "necessaire" which item would hold items necessary such as the note card that is still in place within this one. That card might have originally been a dance card or carnet du bal, or might have been just a daily agenda for a lady's (or fine gentleman's) visiting schedule of the day. Something like a forerunner of our daytime's of the 1980s and our iPhones of present time. A charming collection item, we find these in almost all museum collections. That said, this is a magnificent pair of early 1800s French hand painted Heraldry face screens, beautifully crafted on silk. The vibrant colors and the high skill of the artist make them more like fine art than functional screens, and they beg to be hung as wall art. The old face screens were requisite accoutrement for any fine home in the 1800s, and were handed to guests to protect their faces from the ravages of a direct open large fireplace in the effort to warm a guest but not melt their wax-based makeup, nor turn their pale lovely cheeks a mottled pink/red from the flame. We always watch for them and have had many sets over the years. I never tire of seeing the beautiful manner in which this functional item was created. Very decorative, they range from fine pearl-inlaid and hand painted papier mache, (more typical in UK) to the embroidered, beadwork and needlepoint ones (also typical in UK) to the earlier painted paper and silk ones we find more often out of France. Works of art, all.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. These were normally always made in paris, and it's rather rare to find a nice pair in the old painted silk. The flaw to note would be that one handle has been broken off at the end, so you'd want to either replace the old handles or perhaps cut one to match the shorter form. Depends upon how you intend to display them. I love the idea of these being framed. Fit for a gentleman's room (the Heraldry being quite masculine) or a lady's room, bedroom, etc., and the silk is not torn or tattered as is often the case. A little darkening here or there, not much. The trim on this elegant 18th century French billet dour is tested and hallmarked with the tiny French punch prior to 1809, and is solid 18k gold, yellow in color. The body of the case is fine old Vernis Martin and is inset with some tiny diamonds of mother of pearl. The interior liner is shell, dating c.1750-1809, very well preserved for age and type, indeed. Some would misidentify this as a cigar case, and I suppose one could use it that way, but it's not what the item is. These are truly fascinating old treasures of the era of Marie-Antoinette and shortly before/afterward, and while some misidentify them as being cigar cases, they have a much more fascinating history. This is a French 'billet doux', roughly translated, it means 'sweet note'. In those times, it was white usual for the elite and titled, (and Royals) to have affairs, clandestine meetings with amour as theme, and of course other correspondences with friends and love interests. The typical passing of messages, hand carried by the courier or trusted servant of one person to the intended recipient, these 'billet doux' would hold within them a rolled up and sometimes wax-sealed note. Looks like my photographer missed looking for the very tiny tiny French gold mark, so we'll have another look to see if we can locate one and if so, will have him use microscope camera to capture it if possible. The old French gold mark can be so tiny, most will miss it. But as noted, I also tested to be certain and it is 18k solid gold. The shell body of this one is also in beautiful condition, rich deep dark chocolate color Vernis Martin with inlays of diamond-shaped mother of pearl. I can't make out any painting, which sometimes darkens a great deal over the centuries as the varnishes used go dark. But the surface is good, no damage. The inner insert lip is also in shell, and you see a bit more coloration there, perhaps. Also, that thinner piece shows a bit of chipping around the rim which is quite usual with these and results from normal use in its time. I wish we could make out the paintings on this one. This is from the era of ill-fated French King Louis XVI and his Queen, Marie-Antoinette, and is decorated in the layered oil paint and varnishes method which was her favorite, and created by the Brothers, Martin. Known simply as 'Vernis Martin", the beautiful decorative method remains popular today in these old treasures, and is on view in the decor at the Palace of Versailles. The object we present here is from this era, c.1750-80, and is a "flacon a' sel", (flask of salts) which would have been filled with ground salts and scented with strong perfumes. The vials like these and others were used when passing in public, to mask the unappealing odors of a city grown large and a population often of poverty. One would simply open the vial and a more pleasant odor would fill the air near one's nose, helping to mask or overcome the "odeurs du populations". The original flask it was made to hold still remains within, which is rather rare. This is a larger etui than those similarly made which were used for messages, and known as "billet-doux", but it is similarly made. A wonderful find, just in from a Paris estate. This is a rather unique one I just found in Paris. The body is marked with the French boar's head profile punch mark, guarantee used from 1838 forward for .800/1000 pure silver or 2nd titre. The grade of silver is used for small and often delicate items where strength was a concern, so we see it in sewing sets quite often and in small treasures like this. The body has an outer coating, probably leather or perhaps shagreen, that has been worked in the layered decorative style known as "Vernis Martin" or 'varnish Martin' taken from the Martin Brothers technique popularized during the reign of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. The Martins layered paints and varnishes to get a deep and thrilling surface that could not be done in other ways. The varnish often darkens over time and so many of these items are now much more muted in tone that they would have appeared when new. It's part of the charm that they have that muted tone with pastels, however, as you can see in this little vest etui or necessaire. The case is in remarkably fine condition and opens to reveal a selection of the original items depended upon in travel and daily life. Something like the forerunner of the Swiss Army Knife, they often had knives, pencils, writer's note leaves (like the one shown in this set) and containers that might have held anything from needles to gun powder or tea. They were filled with scissors, stiletto, needle case and perhaps a scent bottle, for either men or women. They remain today as a charming item to collect and display. We have a great selection of them if you're starting out, or some of the really fine ones if you've been collecting a while. Also, the two rear feet appear to have a newer ebony finish and there are a few spots of chipped or missing veneer pieces along the base area. Finally, as you can see in the images, the interior lining is original and complete but does have extensive discoloration on the base portion and some small rips or tattered areas along the sides of the base. We can reline the interior base portion with a cream colored silk if you wish but wanted to leave the original teal moire silk there for now. That's the best way to describe this exceptionally fine and well preserved case, both inside and out. The only thing keeping it from being perfectly pristine is the lack of a pair of manicure scissors (easily replaced) and a little light surface abrasion to the old shell here or there. Not a single bug bite or nip or chip or crack to ruin the perfection of this one, and push-button opener works well, clasps tightly closed, too. The set must have been stored and never used. The ivory brush with boar bristles is clean as can be, as is the file that's built into the handle. The opposite end of the handle is a cuticle tool, and then you have buffer and also a covered pot for polish or nail lotions, cuticle creams.
