The 19th century elegant little carved figures, Swiss Black Forest works of sculpture that seem unimaginable to have carved, and imagine how rare to find ones that remain fully intact like this one. Most often we find thread spools, both men and women's figures. We don't find them often! Through many decades we've found only about 10-15. These 2 are sold as a lot, both in one offering. Those who collect sewing antiques will realize how rare. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout for age and type. The arms are slender as toothpicks, yet remain intact. One hand is lost from each figure, but very little other loss. Narrowed base would be spooled with sewing thread, and the male figure seems to have lost a carved broader base. The carving is impossibly delicate - true museum pieces.
