Such an art, like painting with wool and silk yarns, the overall plan of which must be accomplished line by line. The making of these can take years, decades for the large panels that warmed the walls of the great chateau, palaces of Europe from 1500s and onward. And from those old panels, fragments survive and are fabulous made up as lush down-filled throw pillows with elaborate fringe - you know the look. This one is supple enough, I think, to be made up as a pillow top, but this is how it came to us and we'll leave it framed in case you just want to display a charming 1700s Aubusson putto of your own. The frame is 19th century, but the woven panel is not later than Marie-Antoinette's era, last half of 1700s. The outer frame is 15.25" x 13.25", and the aperture shows 13" x 11" of the panel, which is slightly larger and on stretcher. Looks like there's another inch or so folded under at the vertical ends, so likely 12" x about 14.5" free of the frame. There is not a cover glass, but one could be added if you'd like. Slight looseness to the panel on stretcher. Very good to excellent for age and type. There are no holes, no breaks in the old linen warp/canvas onto which the handmade and dyed wool and silk has been worked. The colors have faded over time, evidenced by the original colors you can see looking at the undisplayed backside of the woven works. The panel seems to me to be sturdy enough to make up as a pillow top. Most that are this old have some holes or insect losses, though this one does not. No odor - very slight scent of wool but nothing musty. Measurements noted above. The gold leaf wooden frame is still lovely. It is 19th century, newer by half, I'd say, of the age of the panel it holds. A lovely antique in its own right. No glass cover on this one. Could be added if you wish to. Lovely old thing, excellent art. Return Policy:We always honor a 3-day return on our items, and guarantee them to be as described. We most often use USPS for our shipping needs but will be happy to ship by another carrier if you prefer. We charge only actual postage & insurance, never a handling fee and never for packaging materials. As always, please also feel free to contact us if you have any problems or concerns, we'll do what we can to ensure a happy and mutually enjoyable transaction.Insurance has been eliminated as an option by ebay, forcing us sellers to either ship your items without insurance or assume that expense also. We always insure our items BUT, more importantly, pack them extremely well knowing that most are not replaceable. Again, damage in transit, while rare in our experience, is due to the postal agency handling and not caused by Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Please remember that when leaving DSR ratings. Thanks! Our shipping days are Tuesday and Friday, paid items will be shipped on the first shipping day after payment is received (except when special circumstances exist). We prefer to use USPS whenever possible, and require all packages to be insured. If you prefer another method of shipment, please mention it.
