A beautiful little bonbon or patch box, late 18th century to early 1800s, it remains a charming little work of art, with a bas relief plaque inside the convex cover glass and mount up top, a golden flower basket, the flowers of which have had appliqués and have been painted. Very early bonbon boxes were small like this, and it's difficult to be certain how it was initially presented or used. A cast body, earlier though than what was by mid-1800s called 'papier mache'. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, there are no chips, no cracks or breaks - a slight roughness to be felt more than seen, along the rim of the lid of the box. Pinned down, I'd say it was a bonbon box, or early confections box. There is no residue or scent of anything inside to suggest snuff.
