A charming lathe-turned wood snuff or bonbon box, hand painted in the manor of Vernis Martin, layered paint and varnish - the favorite decorative style of Marie-Antoinette and invented in her era by the Brothers Martin, hence the name, 'Venis Martin' by which it is described since. One can imagine it filled with bonbons and gifted to a partner attending Opera or ballet at Opera Garnier, turn of century, c. 1890-1900, then kept as a souvenir of the night out. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, lovebirds or doves perched amid florals on a deep dark green ground. The box is painted on all sides, including bottom, and while it has a few small imperfections, it remains most appealing. Photos show all sides for your review.
