Framed in a wood outer frame with a mat of ivory and the old original convex cover glass, this artist signed work in miniature shows us a beautiful young woman in French Empire, earliest 1800s, her Titan or guillotine haircut helps us understand she is a Royalist, and quite possibly the portrait was painted while she and remaining family members lived in exile from France during Revolution and into Napoleonic era, having likely lost family members to the guillotine. Her red sash also is an indication of the political statement her portrait makes. I am unable to read the signature, sorry. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition, rather unique in frame and mat, really, not typical of the French in that era so another clue to her being in exile. That inner mat is ivory, so our rules on ivory will apply to this one. I see no flaws to note, very nicely preserved. One could certainly polish that inner brass aperture frame to a brighter finish, which we did not. Again, outer frame is hand carved in wood, then gilded. Quire a beautiful frame for this poignant portrait.
