You can definitely see the French Impressionist movement influence in this later 1800s hand painted (artist signed) portrait miniature. Both in the colorful treatment of the background, loose strokes, and in the gentleman's portrait, itself. A less formal and more representative depiction, not just of a dignitary, but of a more common man. This is one I found in France, disbursed from a family collection there and while we don't know who he is or the family name, we do have an artist's signature to the outer edge of the wafer/painting, which is completely hidden when the painting is in the frame. I'm not certain I can translate or identify that artist, but have shown it as clearly as possible in hopes you can.
Very good to excellent throughout. The portrait is larger at 3 3/8" diameter (frame) plus the additional bow top. Slightly convex cover glass, no damage anywhere.
