I'm always drawn to carved wood. This is a good sized frame I found in France, entirely hand carved and I believe it is more likely French-carved rather than Black Forest, but we just have the one category for carved items. If pressed, I would date it c.1880 to as late as 1920, possibly created for a mourning photo, such as for WWI lost soldier or loved on, but the florals and ribbon scrolls have survived and would be superb for a wedding photo, wouldn't it? There is not a glass currently but one could certainly have one cut. The back wood panel simply pulls out and provides easy access to insert your own photo or small painting. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition, unsigned but entirely hand carved. I really don't see flaws on it, no breaks or chips. Interesting outer form and Art Nouveau feel to the asymmetrical florals and form. No cracks, no restorations. Tender devotional work of carver's art.
