Fabulous antique Victorian or Napoleon III era Italian micro mosaic (micromosaic) 6 7/8" picture frame, a lovely garland of flowers & foliage set in a vivid blue or turquoise mat with a unique shape & wonderful visual appeal! Looking for something completely unrelated in our warehouse, I found a small crate with several fantastic micro mosaic pieces in it. It was a little like Christmas :). All of them needed just a little bit of help, a few missing glass tiles or "tesserae", so I brought them home and fixed them up a bit and will be adding them over the next week or so.
Grand Tour souvenir treasures of Italy. Tiny pieces of colored glass, called tesserae, are worked piece by piece into the cement material spread into the frame's inner recess and over a great deal of time, a bouquet and elegant images take form. The uniqueness of the art a legacy that goes back to Byzantine and Roman times. This one gorgeous, the sea blue coloring with twisted wire inner band is so attractive and the other two frames that I'm putting on this week follow a similar theme & coloring scheme. Beautiful!
Very good condition. As you can see in the images, there are a few defects that come with age. I've included enlarged and clear images so any and all flaws can be seen but don't hesitate to ask if you have a question. It has all of the tabs and easel stand on the back but the brass inner backing plate is a replacement (as is the glass). See images for all measurements.
