We've seen this little dog before in quite a few representations. He was the favorite pet of Queen Victoria and enjoyed much love and veneration as the beloved Royal spaniel. King Charles Spaniel, the breed remains very popular today, still hearkening back to its history. I was surprised at the upper flight of stairs in the Vienna Natural History Museum (If memory serves) to find a display case housing this dog, a taxidermy work that seemed macabre to me, but perhaps gave the Queen a relief to some of her considerable grief when her beloved pet died. That said, digressing, sorry - this panel has openwork linen canvas surrounding the worked wool yarn needlepoint of Dash, and though it wasn't in frame, it was folded around the card backing shown, sewn to hold it in place and stretch it. One could certainly work the panel up as a decorative Victorian authentic panel in a throw pillow, or return it to a frame (the backing with information will come with it).

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, no holes in the old canvas and no bug damage to the stitches in wool and perhaps some silk yarns. There is some overall fading to the canvas, or discoloration of age. Nearly 200 years old, the note dates it c1841-42, which is consistent with the time when everyone was very into Dash. Measurements are noted on the photos.
