Splendid portrait miniature, profile from latest 1700s to as late as 1815, a touch back to history and the early 1700s tradition of profile images. This young man has possibly the most perfect hair cut I've seen on these men, and one wonders if the pride of it dictated the profile. It is, of course, the male version of the Titan or Guillotine cut, short cropped back and pushed forward short curls, the baring of back of neck for a clean guillotine beheading. I do feel, if we could see him full frontal, he's got the extra thick exaggerated ascot of the Incroyables et Merveilleuses, the political statement rich youth who used fashion to protest The Terror, c.1795-99. Interesting group if you wish to study more.
Very good to excellent condition throughout on this one. Good sized, as well, with measurements noted on the photos. Frame is also one of the nicest I've had from this era, very well preserved. I find no flaws to the painting at all. The cover glass is flat, which might mean it is a later replacement. No indication on the painting of a broken glass - no scratches or warp, very nice!
