RARE late 1700s to earliest 1800s micro mosaic plaque, unmounted and undamaged in lapis lazuli stone basin. Sand-sized colored glass tesserae all in place, smooth and flat. Shown is the "Temple of Minerva Medica", Rome, believed dating to the 4th century. but in fact might only be located on the site of that temple, this  nymphaeum  (in service to mythical nymphs) and was connected to the water supply. It has been known by its misnomer to this day but is located on the approximate spot of the Temple, which was mentioned by Cicero. One just never sees this ruin among micro mosaics.  Also rare would be the semi-precious stone basin, lapis lazuli. The plaque is 39 mm x 17 mm x 3 mm.
Excellent condition for age and type. I find no loss or damage to report. Crisp bevel edging, very fine work in sand-sized tesserae. There are no chips, hairlines, cracks nor raised or missing tesserae. Unmounted plaques like this are rare but popular to have mounted in bespoke jewelry such as that by artist, Elizabeth Locke, as example, who incorporates antique items into her exquisite jewelry.
