Charming antique Swiss Black Forest hand carved match or toothpick holder, a finely detailed bearded man with woven pack or basket on back, one at his feet and displayed on a beautifully carved plinth! These 19th century elegant little carved figures, Swiss Black Forest works of sculpture that seem unimaginable to have carved, and imagine how rare to find ones that remain after all of these years. Most often we find thread spools, both men and women's figures though we don't find them often! This one is exceptionally fine. Those who collect sewing antiques will realize how rare. Those who collect Black Forest will also recognize the rarity and excellence of these little, relatively delicate figures. Very good condition, age & materials considered. This one shows chipping to the man's hat brim and some small nips around the upper edge of the front basket. There is also a repaired break at the figure's ankle area, secured with a steel rod so likely more stable and strong than the original. See images for all measurements.
