Well, of course I am a bit in love with this one - full of character, a thrilling glimpse at a time long gone, our American Revolutionary time, c.1770s, and a distinguished old officer who holds his snuff box in hands as he poses for his portrait. The he has such a fabulous nose and double chin, interesting features just locks it in a a spectacular little painting. The artist has not signed the work, sadly, and I have no ID for this gentleman, but one can certainly see he knows he was a figure of resolve in the history of his world.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Painted in gouache on wafer, framed in the typical French frames which date from c.1750-1850s, really. The manner of his uniform, the style of his hair, each help lock him into his time: c.1770s, Georgian era, Louis XV-XVI era. I'm not an expert in uniforms so asking those of you who are to tell us more if you would. Also, If anyone happens to recognize his distinct face, please do email. Thank you. Measurements are noted on our photos. I bought this 250 year old portrait in France.
