A truly exceptional find, just in from France, this is a superbly hand carved Black Forest bull. The cows and bulls are the rarest carvings from Switzerland's famed carvers, 19th century. Unsigned, but almost certainly the work of Johann Huggler. One would definitely anticipate a signature, yet I'm not finding one and I know not all of Huggler's carvings, particularly earlier ones were signed "J.Huggler, Brienz". Johann Huggler (1834-1913). The larger size, 12.5" in length and a height of 10.25" (31 cm x 25 cm) sets it apart as does the superb anatomical study. Lots of photos for your inspection. Johann Huggler's carvings range up to $7000 range, ArtPrice list of prior sales. Cows and Bulls are rare! We sold a mid-sized grouping of 3 cows in the $5k range a while ago, also attributed though without signature. The bull is much larger. Fascinating for an artist to carve something like this from a single large block of wood, but it is the case here.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Shows and displays so beautifully, and looking him over, he would appear not to have any loss at all. A blacklight shows me there are a couple of very nicely done restorations, however. Horn, and possibly a break at leg which is remarkably difficult to see (check photos). It would be super rare to find one without a little restoration. Full measurements noted on photos. Cattleman, Chalet, French Country decor - fans of "Yellowstone" and upcoming "6666" rancher series - do not miss this rare find!
