This truly incredible tiny work of art is a personal favorite of mine after decades of collecting. I love the landscape settings, for one, but also the exquisite detail in a painting so small is fascinating to me. The beautiful young women's faces are only 1/4" from chin to hairline. And just look at the elegance of detail throughout the entire 3 3/8" tall oval painting. The women and scene, clothing, would indicate Georgian era. I do believe this is an early 1800s miniature after a painting done in the Georgian era, full-sized. Something I remember from countless hours in the art museums of the world. Siddons sisters come to mind, but I didn't instantly locate the painting. If you recognize it, please email. I might wake up with the answer in some middle of the night - typical. I digress. The miniatures painted by artists such as this one who has signed the work, were done as souvenirs for Grand Tour travelers who enjoyed their museum visits and would wish to take home a favorite or a memento of their enjoyment. I, too, have loved collecting miniatures. I found this one in France.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Not a single flaw notable on the painting, accomplished in gouache upon thin natural wafer, typical of the genre. The French frame and the original convex and highly polished cover glass have done a wonderful job protecting and preserving this painting for 2 centuries. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
