I'™ll be brief in describing each one, but they'™ve come to us out of Paris and from the estate of a noted (and titled) collector who chose to remain anonymous. Wish we could disclose. This one is a great one for the smaller cheroot cigars popular in their time, and is a fine leather slip case, baffled to hold about 3-4 cigars (see final image to show with cigars). These are referred to as 'boat' or 'ship captain' inkwells because of the flared base, extra wide and usually weighted so it won't tip with the rocking of the ocean waves! No weighting in this inkwell though, just the solid silver so you know what you're getting as far as the weight in troy ounces. All three pieces have hallmarks, the Italian prancing horse on the inkwell & blotter (similar to that made famous by Ferrari) and "800" on all three designating the silver content (at least 80% pure so just under the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). I'm more familiar with French and English sterling silver makers so, being Italian, I haven't had much luck in my existing reference guides. The inkwells themselves are also superb, huge and heavy with a beautiful shape and deep wheel cut decoration & facet cut tops. Amazing attention to detail and beautifully preserved, obviously cherished works of a true French or English master!

The earliest that we can date the conception of the inkwell is with the Ancient Egyptians, where members of wealthy or upper-class families hired scribes to write for them. These scribes used small ink palettes housed in pieces of stone with round hollows for each separate colour of ink. Over time, these palettes became larger pieces of stone or clay, and gradually were developed into being containers when a stopper was added to protect and add to the longevity of the ink. In Europe, prior to the sixteenth century, a scribe or scrivener would correspond using a quill pen and ink on behalf of aristocracy, as writing was considered to be a lowly task. As the art of writing traveled across the world animal horns began to be used as the material for making ink containers. To begin with, these inkwells were fairly basic and designed purely for purpose, with little ornamentation. The decorative inkwells were introduced during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Gold and silver inkwells began to make an appearance. During the Baroque period, excessive ornamentation was common throughout Western Europe, as was the fashion within most silverware, jewellery and clothing at this time. The inkwell was then further developed as the portable inkwell was devised around the time of the American Civil war, so that soldiers could carry them easily and write their correspondence from the battlefield. Affluent travelers used inkwells specifically designed to be compact, housed within boxes which also held other writing equipment such as quills, ink, paste papers (used to seal letters) and a sander (to hold a fine sand, sprinkled to prevent ink smearing), medications and toiletries. Such boxes were known as compendiums. The invention of the typewriter in the 1870s spelled the demise of the inkwell, along with the first fully functional and reliable fountain pen being patented by Lewis Waterman in 1884. With increasingly practical fountain pens increasingly being produced in the twentieth century, the demand for inkwells fell to the point of obscurity, now being regarded as a rarity which is only owned by collectors. This set being a stellar example of the opulence of some writing related pieces, exceptional in every way and they really do make the finest decorative accents! One assumes a woman with very long hair, but it is also the case that a young boy's long locks would be shorn at about the age or 4-5 years and those long locks were sometimes kept as a memento as a boy went from being Mama's babe to being Papa's fils (son), and this might well have been the commemoration herein - a bracelet that is larger than most and would have likely been made for a man. Monogram: F. Sold without the antique box that it's shown in, by the way. The box isn't original to it, does not go with it. The hair is virtually weightless, and the 13.25 grams would be mostly the 18k gold clasp.

Very good to excellent, one of the nicest we've ever found and not a hair out of place, which is very rare. The chestnut brown hair is tightly woven into plaits that are round and hollow and approximately .25" in diameter, then braided in double strand to achieve the look you see. As noted, not a single broken or misplaced hair showing on this one, and no dents or damage to the gold clasp, either. It's ready to be framed again and hung in your Victorian or English Manor home, or just center your collection of beloved "women's art". A romance scene, we see a young man coaxing a pretty maiden to amour. The iconography tells us she is still a virgin (the jug is not broken, her purse remains gathered closed), and she is she or turning away from his advances. A lesson, a sampler, this one tells us so much about the life of a late Georgian or early Victorian girl, and reminds her, surely hanging in her room, of what is expected of her in retaining her virtue. Charming theme; a very dainty stitch, entire done by hand, with added outer border of flowers and the text, "The Last Appeal" worded across the bottom. Charming! Gutta percha was a very early cartable material of rather mysterious content. I've read it was super-fine sawdust in a suspension of proteins like casein and perhaps other blood products, as well. It was perhaps the world's first "plastic", and was moldable into the fine detail you see here, in a time when hand carved wood was both very popular and also expensive. The thrilling bas relief achieved with moulds was an early industrialized production method and you'll find objects and primarily early photograph cases and frames like these. We've had hand mirrors, desktop items and inkwells, and perpetual calendars, a cigar case or two and even a couple of barometer cases of this material over the years. Or similarly, there on the window seat and atop the Sferra bedspread on my bed? - You get the idea. And I've still been keep these panels, too. I'm clearing out collected c.1600-1800s French tapestries of 30 years' serious collecting. I pretty much kept the best ones for myself. This is the stash of a very committed antiques dealer. I'm at that stage of life when the word, "downsizing" begins to take on meaning. I realize I will not find the perfect way to put this incredible antique French Aubusson woven tapestry to use. Nope, no more entire home redecorating that will incorporate this panel as a headboard, or a massive bolster pillow. Not going to frame it and hang in in my hunting lodge. This is a magnificent huge Aubusson panel that once graced the back of a very large French canapé, sofa. I have the panel that was upholstery for the seat, too (see it in the final images). I'm offering them separately. This one is a country scene, children and goats, beautiful floral border. The other larger panel (sold separately) is hunt themed, hounds chasing down a large stag. The wool and silk yarns used are delicate in size and so tightly woven, it's a true work of art. Loom arts from the Aubusson factories, long famed in France and throughout the world for their splendor. The panel's background color was once mustard. I've shown the backside so you can see the original yarns. The panel needs a cleaning, though it has no odor, it does have dust of a century, perhaps. I have done nothing to try to clean it. I always intended to use just that rectangular part which isn't darkened so much as the mustard section. That rectangle is 55.5" x 19". The overall panel just as you see it in our photos is 66" x 26" largest, with some cutaways where it was necessary to fit to the large sofa. You'll know the perfect way to put it to use. It's a tough one to photograph, so I've shown you the overall panels and then close-ups of the figures. One of my favorite panels of my "stash". It has been stored rolled, archival tissue and cotton. No weakened spots that represent folds. Before I bought it in Paris, it had been on the old furniture it was made for. For shipment, it will be rolled and shipped in a tube for best protection. You might want the other panel. I'm listing them separate since the other panel has a scene with hounds chasing down a large stag, and is versatile of theme apart from this one with a country pastoral scene with 4 people and several goats, a butter churn - a French Romantic image hailing from late 1700s - the time of Boucher, Fragonard, etc.. We purchased this with a claim that it was by or associated with Faberge in some way but I've not been able to, so far. The silversmith marks appear to be for Theodor Nugren from the workshop of Pavel Ovchinnikov (c.1830–88), St. Petersburg, Russia, 1899–1908. When it comes to jewelers of the Russian Imperial court, the first name to be mentioned is of course Faberge, which produced gem-encrusted Easter eggs, cigarette cases made of precious metals, and other objects as presents for the royal family and aristocracy. However, there were many other official court jewelers whose skills were equally exquisite. One of those was that of Pavel Ovchinnikov.

Pavel Ovchinnikov was appointed official purveyor to the future Tsar Alexander III (1865), King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (1873), Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich (1878) and King Christian IX of Denmark (1888). He was awarded the Légion d’honneur (1867) and the Order of the Iron Crown (1873). His firm was a trendsetter on the Russian pre-revolution jewelry market. He revived and developed the art of producing enamels. Thin layers of enamel over filigree were applied to the company's dinnerware and icon rizas: the ornament would be created with the use of a silver thread, and the spaces between the individual threads would be filled with enamel of different colors. This was even more complex than the "stained-glass" enamel technique pioneered by Ovchinnikov. Without any solid base, this enamel looked like a glass painting in a Gothic cathedral if held up to light. The company also used the ancient niello technique to create engravings of the Kremlin and Moscow cathedrals. One of the firm's most prominent works was a luxurious icon screen, made of silver and gold, for the Kremlin's Dormition Cathedral. Ovchinnikov was one of the first entrepreneurs of the 19th century to realize the importance of artistic education, and he founded a school for talented young people to study goldsmithery for five or six years. The combination of the zolotnik and city marks together in the oblong oval marking, as seen on this piece, was used between 1882-1899. The "84" tells us that the piece is in at least .875 silver (87.5% pure silver so just under the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). The hammer & sickle mark to the right of that is for the city of St. Petersburg. Larger than the average snuff box, smaller than the average cigar case, this one is missing the original ribbons on the inside that would have held the cigarettes or cheroots in each side but that's easily fixed if you so wish. A lovely piece, an exquisite stocking stuffer :).

Very good condition. There is a dark spot visible on the lid, I'm sure it would polish out but we somehow missed doing so before photographing. The old mirror in the lid and the chenille trim are each original, as is papered interior lining. The box is solid lemonwood, contrasted with darker wood edging and base, bun feet. Decorative stain painting on that serpentine lid draws the eye. Such a pretty thing! We're listing several of these empty boxes from the same era (sold separately) that look so pretty clustered together (see our final photo). You might want to own them all.

Very good condition for age and type. The old wood is superb, and no chips to note, no cracks. A superb bit of cabinetmaker's artistry in the form. And more than 200 years since made, it has lost nothing more than its ring handle up top center (mount remains) and the escutcheon which was likely mother of pearl. As noted the interior's original lift-out tray is also gone from this box. Measurements are noted directly on the photos. This one is 7.5" long.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0298/3392/0556/products/32_805469d9-029b-41df-acce-c94ce36806b8.png?v=1580322296
antique-french-sterling-silver-mother-of-pearl-12pc-8-dessert-knife-set-box
Antique French Sterling Silver & Mother of Pearl 12pc 8" Dessert Knife Set, Box

Gorgeous antique French Napoleon III era sterling silver 8" dessert, luncheon or entremet sized knife set with elegant solid mother of pearl handles, engraved "MD" monograms and beautifully ornate stylized Neo-Gothic style silver caps & collars! As elegant as can be, very French with the pearl & silver, the blades are all hallmarked and date from 1838 (Minerva hallmark) to the late 1800s. The caps & collars on the handles bear no hallmarks but they're also silver of course. The blades all bear the French Minerve or Minerva hallmarks, the tiny number "1" within those marks means they're in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). There are two silversmith marks among the blades, those of B. Fuchs and also Pierre Queille, both date to the mid-late 1800s. The set is simply stunning. Fabulous!

Very good to excellent condition. There is some visible tarnish in the recessed decoration of the silver handle caps & collars. Some slight fading to the enamel fill in the engraved monograms, see pictures. No damage to note, no chips, cracks or repairs to the pearl handles. Just wonderful!
