Just in from France, and as of today, Jan 27, 2026, this 4 gram 18k gold thimble has a melt value of over $700. For its historical value and rarity, and age, of course that is not how we value. The near pristine 1700s shagreen hinged case is super-rare. Shagreen is the belly scale leather of stingray, and you can see the roundish scales clearly. The ultimate luxury in its time, shagreen items grow increasingly rare, particularly in this fine condition. Full measurements are noted on our photos.
Very good to excellent condition, age and type considered. The pair look as if they've been tucked away as treasures for their 285 or so years since each was hand crafted by French artisans, ahead of the French Revolution. Thimble has no evidence of us, and is in perfect round. It is smallish. Fits my pointer, ring, and pinkie finger, though. The etui is made of wood which has a veneer of that rarest tiny scale green shagreen - belly of a small stingray, and it is near perfect, incredible for its age. A museum quality set!
