An unidentified but very handsome 18th century hand painted portrait miniature, powdered hair and a striped silk velvet top coat with high collar. You can also see the black bow at his nape of neck which would be holding his poly tail - easy to put him in his place in time, c.1760-70s. A face just 5/8" from chin to hairline, yet with the most expressive eyes and fine treatment of features. An amazing miniaturist, but as is typical, the artists only rarely signed their work. I find no identity. Full measurements noted on our photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Exceptionally fine painting in miniature, a little disruption to the paint where artist has worked to capture texture of the silk velvet striped topcoat. No chips nor breaks. Very well protected in original wood frame and under original slightly convex cover glass, a copper foil backing to push light back through the painting's thin wafer. Fabulous miniature!
