I've had a few of these that were perhaps a century earlier, but I believe this is an early to mid-1800s model made in the same manner, a wooden slab hinged to create a fold-close case or etui, and recessed navigational compass, combined with the working sun dial. Very nice condition with plenty of age to it, a pre-electric and electronic item upon which travelers depended for centuries. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. A side bracket braces it open, folds and latch closure holds it compact and closed for pocket or backpack lightweight carry. The compass has a glass cover, and has no damage. A printed paper inside lid to instruct.
