A mourning 'souvenir' dated 8, May, 1846, and I've looked and looked and can't quite figure out what it commemorates. Perhaps one of my French friends will instantly know, but in French history chronology, I find nothing on a National basis to pin it to. Perhaps it mourns a soldier. Perhaps the story is to be found on the backside, which has very old pen and ink writing which is nearly undecipherable. A crest of sorts. All of these are mysteries to be solved. The outer frame is 6 3/8" x 5 1/4" oval and it is a wooden frame nearly 1/2" in depth. Beautifully preserved.
Very good to excellent condition, there is a little light dust on the black panel inside which is caught by the camera or the lights. It doesn't really show up to the naked eye or in display. Cover glass is convex, and the inner roundel also has a beveled cover glass. Beautifully crafted. I just wish I knew its story.
