Magnificent artistry in this pencil and pastel portrait, signed by artist and dated 1824, it has a bit about the piece noted on backside. First of all, the artist is certainly of the school of David, and Ingres. The small sketch portraits done by each of those famed French artists very closely resemble this one. not a print, it is a single work of art, entirely by the artist's hand. Our sitter is noted as being "Alexandrine de Grouches de Chepy", born at the Chateau de Huppy on the 7th March, 1790. Married 19 July 1811 to Antoine-Etienne-Jean, Comte of Grouches, Chevalier, Marquis of Chepy, and his wife, Marie-Jeanne de Fazey. More info, etc., etc.," in French on backside. She married Alexandre Aime Ducaastel. There is more. I was able to locate a family heritage page online that confirms the information on backside. She was mother to 3 daughters. Very good to excellent condition, original artwork in the school of Ingres, early 1800s, France. (dated 1824). Pencil and pastel on paper, original old frame. The outer measurement is 12" x 9.5" and it is .75" in depth. Original paper backing still sealed and very nicely preserved within. A stunningly fine portrait sketch. Aperture is 10" x 7.75". Intimate, for a bookshelf, perhaps, or on your wall (or mine). I am in love with these old sketches.
