A wonderful scene, though I'm guessing at that being Gallileo kneeling. Perhaps if you recognize the scene you will email us and we'll review. It's a wonderful mid-1800s fine stitch needlepoint in silk and wool yarns, very nicely preserved in what would appear to be the original frame. A gold filet performs as a perfect mat to encase the tapestry. Purchased in France, we are uncertain who stitched it.
Very good to excellent and no glass present so much easier (and lighter weight) for shipment. One could always add a protective glass. I think it is very likely it was glazed for a century and a half, since there is not any bug loss to the wool or silk yarns. But is certainly shows perfectly without. The figures and the interior of the Palace are beautifully composed, executed. These were often the work of young girls learning their stitches, embroidery. Measurements noted on images, but it is nice-sized: 24.5" x 20.75" outer frame, and 1.5" in depth. The frame is in nice antique condition, too.
