Fabulous large 28 3/8" x 23 1/4" antique Victorian era needlepoint sampler or "Souvenir" tapestry in rosewood frame, dated "1858" with a tomb, churches & buildings, figures, flowers & foliage and in wonderful condition! Wow, a truly visual experience here with all of those smaller separate scenes! Beautifully done and, as you can see, the needlepoint itself is in superb condition. The frame was some loss to the inlaid cream colored bands but one could probably restore that with a bit of matched color paint surely. The back of the frame is sealed and appears original, there is a flange in the front for glass though this one has no glass (likely removed before its journey here from France to minimize the possibility of breaking in transit and damaging the needlepoint. Easily replaced though. A lovely piece, don't miss it!
Very good condition. As noted, there is some loss to the cream colored inlay in the rosewood veneered frame but no real damage or flaws otherwise. The needlepoint does have some age darkening but no rips, tears, losses or repairs that I can see. See images for all measurements.
