A marvelous 18th century portrait miniature, c.1850-70 (Louis XV - Louis XVI) gentleman of notable nobility but we do not have his ID. Powdered wig with his hair tied in long pony tail at nape with black bow, a fashion of his time in history. The snuff box is worked in a patterned color, a Vernis Martin finish in blue. Vernis Martin is the name attached to a decorative style created with layering of paint and varnish. Sometimes patterned, sometimes painted in scenes and an elaborate surface. This one is beautiful and has just a small scape to the top, visible as a darker spot. I have not tested the many bands, but do not believe them to be 18k gold. Original painting portrait still perfect beneath original slightly convex cover glass (see glares), and a face full of drama and pride, and just 5/8" from chin to hairline. Full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The box is between 250-300 years of age, survives very well with a small minimum of disruption to the old Vernis Martin decorative work, visible there to the right of portrait in our view, certainly could have small restoration. The rest of this one is superb. Beautiful red to chocolate shell lining, and all of the original trim bands still intact. A gem!
