Such delicate work, this petit French Limoges Neo-Renaissance patch box, kiln-fired enamel of the very finest quality, mounted with .800/1000 silver layered in 18k gold (vermeil). The ground is a deep cobalt blue-black, and just look - every point of view top, bottom all around it is a thrill of fine art. Kiln-fired enamel is truly the most difficult art form to master. I've tried it and it is monstrously complex and takes decades of apprenticeship to become a Master. Some people mistake this art for being glass or ceramic, but it is ceramic powders worked in many layers and firings on a shaped copper (or sometimes silver) form. The Limoges enamels are the most sought after of all, for centuries. I'm always drawn to them. Figural, Renaissance forms and representations - fabulous! Measurements noted on photos.

Very good to excellent condition, from a noted French estate (remaining anonymous), the collector with a commitment to top workmanship, says there is a tiny are of restoration also done by the Limoges enamelists, Masters. I can't tell where it is, likely back somewhere on bottom bulbous box and typically light loss would be near hinges. You see the French boar's head punch mark, 19th century guarantee of .800/1000 silver, a coating of 18k gold (vermeil). Look also for our other amazing Limoges boxes - sold separately.
