These are so fun, and the larger ones fitted to a stand with large cigar barrel (or pipe, tobacco, etc) and a 2nd basket for matches just hardly ever show up. I found this one in France, and am surprised how complete and undamaged it is after all this time (late 19th century to very early 20th). I've put measurements on the photos. The barrel will hold treats or up to 5" long cigars. Very sturdy base, these are fabulous kitchen accents in a Country French decor, as well. Fitted as well with a pocket watch hook at the beak. It is from the carvers of the Swiss Black Forest, likely someone's souvenir of their c.1890-1914 Grand Tour.
Very good to excellent condition, feathers, legs, beak intact. I can find a single flat flashed chip visible from the backside only (lighter wood). The base is large and it's very sturdy. The lid to the barrel is not warped at all, nor is any of the carving, and it fits very snug in place. What appears to be perhaps a signature is carved into the base of the leaves, but I can't make it out. A photo shows it in close-up.
