I'm disbursing panels I just am never going to get to make up in to those lush opulent down-filled throw pillows I love. YOU get to do it, instead. This pair of late 1700s to early 1800s panels would have been chair back upholstery pieces, and have suffered very little wear as such (seats usually get quite tattered, but back, not much). They are loomed panels, most likely Aubusson, and the subject of 2 children at play is very charming and appealing for pillows. You are buying the pair of slightly odd-shaped panels, as shown, in very good condition. Each panel is large at 18" tall and 15" wide (workable with additional distance beyond the folds you can see in the photos - that represents where the outer perimeter was folded back and then tacked to the wooden chair back)Linen warp with wool and perhaps some silk yarns used. You can either fold back and mount to a velvet back larger, or cut the panel as you'd like, and then work up as front to a lavishly fringed pillow pair. I have made up many from this era, quite similar to this one and have sold many over the years. I've loved them for decades. Meant to add this one to the group but here it remains for you to do it or have it done. I've placed a ruler that registers both inches and millimeters so you can see how incredibly tiny these stitches are. Finer than petit-point. And I've only used needlepoint in title because it is basically that type of embroidery stitch, needlework.

Very good to excellent for age and type. The linen canvas is strong. There are really very few flaws, quite remarkable considering the age. There is only the usual scent of woodwork with age, but no odor of mildew or anything similar. The figures are wonderful! The yarns used are all fine, hand dyed, palette range is fabulous and still vibrant. I have shown the backside so you can see the work, original unfaded colors, not so much different than the front side. If there are any fine splits in between woven yarns, I have been bedazzled enough not to notice. You please look closely at the photos just in case. They have no visible moth or insect damage or loss. Measurements also appear on the photos. Lies very flat, will be lightly rolled with archival tissue for shipment. Will be listing a large private collection (my own) of c.1600 = c.1850 tapestry panels. Schirrmann, Paris marked Black Forest hand carved 19 3/4" tall mantel clock with ornate foliate decoration and two HUGE long-tailed game bird figural top! WOW, isn't this one exquisite! Exactly what comes to mind when you think of the fine old museum quality Black Forest clocks, isn't it. Beautiful, highly ornate foliate carving covering the base and the "Fruits of the Hunt" style is as attractive as they come. The clock case with an attached solid wood base or plinth bringing the total height to an impressive 19 3/4". The upper portion of the case, consisting of those gorgeous leaves & game bird figures, has been carved from one large solid block of what is likely rosewood given the heavy weight that you don't find with other Black Forest pieces that have been carved in Linden wood. Just imagine the painstakingly long process of getting from such a large block of wood to what you see here. Amazing! The detail and artistry are superb, don't you just love those overly long tail feathers extending down the outer sides of the case. If you look closely at the brass clock hands, there's even a wonderful dolphin figure on the minute hand extending from the scrolling tendrils & foliage. Fantastic condition, far better than you would expect with a 100 year old wooden clock and the overall visual and decorative appeal are undeniable. A rare beauty, don't miss it!

Very good to excellent condition, age & materials in mind. As you can see, and as one would expect, there are some visible worm or bug holes but nothing active. Possibly a few small chips to leaf tips but I see no breaks or repairs to note. The clock face has all of the numeral plaques, all in enamel on convex copper with blue enamel numerals. There is also an enamel plaque along the bottom noting the maker or, more likely, French retailer of the piece and reads "Ed. Schirrmann, 7 Rue Royale, Paris". No chips or damage to the enamel numeral plaques but there is are two hairlines to the enamel retailer panel. The clock mechanism is WORKING and also bears the same marking for the maker or retailer. Or similarly, there on the window seat and atop the Sferra bedspread on my bed? - You get the idea. And I've still been keep these panels, too. I'm clearing out collected c.1600-1800s French tapestries of 30 years' serious collecting. I pretty much kept the best ones for myself. This is the stash of a very committed antiques dealer. I'm at that stage of life when the word, "downsizing" begins to take on meaning. I realize I will not find the perfect way to put this incredible antique French Aubusson woven tapestry to use. Nope, no more entire home redecorating that will incorporate this panel as a headboard, or a massive bolster pillow. Not going to frame it and hang in in my hunting lodge. This is a magnificent huge Aubusson panel that once graced the back of a very large French canapé, sofa. I have the panel that was upholstery for the seat, too (see it in the final images). I'm offering them separately. This one is a country scene, children and goats, beautiful floral border. The other larger panel (sold separately) is hunt themed, hounds chasing down a large stag. The wool and silk yarns used are delicate in size and so tightly woven, it's a true work of art. Loom arts from the Aubusson factories, long famed in France and throughout the world for their splendor. The panel's background color was once mustard. I've shown the backside so you can see the original yarns. The panel needs a cleaning, though it has no odor, it does have dust of a century, perhaps. I have done nothing to try to clean it. I always intended to use just that rectangular part which isn't darkened so much as the mustard section. That rectangle is 55.5" x 19". The overall panel just as you see it in our photos is 66" x 26" largest, with some cutaways where it was necessary to fit to the large sofa. You'll know the perfect way to put it to use. Centuries old, finest quality - a museum panel!

Very good condition for age and type. A nod to need of a cleaning, the overall tapestry panel is strong, worthy of most any project - pillows, a topper for a long bench - bolsters. A few spots you'll put time into with a needle and heavy thread, to close smallish openings in the warp. or fine as it is for framing and hanging, instead. It's a tough one to photograph, so I've shown you the overall panels and then close-ups of the figures. One of my favorite panels of my "stash". It has been stored rolled, archival tissue and cotton. No weakened spots that represent folds. Before I bought it in Paris, it had been on the old furniture it was made for. For shipment, it will be rolled and shipped in a tube for best protection. You might want the other panel. I'm listing them separate since the other panel has a scene with hounds chasing down a large stag, and is versatile of theme apart from this one with a country pastoral scene with 4 people and several goats, a butter churn - a French Romantic image hailing from late 1700s - the time of Boucher, Fragonard, etc.. Aren't these great! Not only are they wonderful little pieces of decorative Bru doll sized furniture but they also make fabulous display vitrines for your prized smalls! This Napoleon III era miniature would have been the delight of some doll owner or collector, but it's likely original purpose was to show the skills of an apprentice to a master cabinetry maker, or 'ebeniste' of the last half of 1800s. The items of miniature furniture like this, almost to exclusion of all, were miniaturized furnishings popular in the time they were made, and were projects to show mastery of different furniture making skills. The hardware is often one of a kind hand made/cast and we see fine details like dovetails on the drawers, superb exotic veneers, each section hand hewn and put together to the student's design. A Master could then evaluate the work, move an apprentice up the skills set as warranted. These served something like a semester's final exam, of sorts. Now, of course, these old pieces are wonderful and sought after to group on a buffet top, or to house and show off collections of small, and of course the doll collectors beg for them, as well. These can accent display of your own Bru or other French or European dolls. Aren't they fun! Immense visual & decorative appeal! The walnut framework is simply fabulous, only a bit of something in the upper rear of the right side (where the walnut meets the arched top). Also, the back wood panel shows quite a bit of age, some bug holes but nothing active. The curved top of the armoire is in black papier mache, not wood, and has a bit of edge & corner roughening. As noted, the interior has been relined in a cream moire silk style fabric, not actually silk, and the glass shelves were professionally cut to shape with sanded edges. The only other thing worth mentioning is that, at some point, someone used a wood putty something to secure the front glass in the outer door frame and matched the color (mostly) with a wood stain. I see some little tarnish on the underside of the base, but really not much at all of anything to report otherwise. There is a loose bobeche in each one, by the way, and those remove to anchor and set candles more easily. They don't have much of a lip for drip, however. This is a magnificent huge Aubusson panel that once graced the seat of a very large French canapé, sofa. I have the panel that was upholstery for the back, too (see it in the final images). I'm offering them separately. This one is hunt themed, hounds chasing down a large stag. That rectangle is 65.5" x 21". The overall panel just as you see it in our photos is 76" x 35" largest, with some cutaways where it was necessary to fit to the large sofa. You'll know the perfect way to put it to use. The stands are also elegantly crafted and have contrasting wood stringing, a 3-tier base raised on 1" bun feet of wood. The lathe-carved finials and old hardware are also complete. The old adjustable brackets all work, allowing an easy raising ow lowering of the screen to protect one from the heat of a large booming Georgian Manor's fireplaces. The embroidery is phenomenal, silk on silk of course, and figural with tomb of Shakespeare as one aspect of the oval cartouche. Elegantly dressed young ladies, loads of flowers framing them in. The gold silk has age, being 250-300 years in age, but protected well behind cover glass and within their frames, they'll remain this beautiful for several more lifetimes. These would have been made, most likely, by a young lady - embroidery being one of the things taught to elegant and noble girls/young women. Not all were taught to read in that era, but comportment, sewing, art of a sort - those were taught to women who would become wives to noblemen. I have no ID, no backstory to tell who is was who did the work. The heavy silk fabric backs also remain in fine condition, with one tear toward bottom. Finials, poles, base and brackets, all intact. One small bit of trim on top of the base, where the pole fits into, on one stand is missing. I've shown it in detail. Turned to the back, it won't be noticed. One might opt to have a woodworking expert make the little replacement and miter it to fit. The display beautifully. I never see these outside of museums, not in pairs. A rare treat for some grand home! The screens come off, shipping will be easier, safer, and more compact than one might fear. You will very likely never see a set like this available on market. A cotton velvet backing was used, surrounding the old needlework with French cord passementerie trim. The pillow form inside is feather and down, and I will disclose that once in a while a feather sticks through the needlework. I loved these decades ago and there are 2 others made by that same designer that have the matching thick red cord and the palette (sold separately). Great for sofa or bed. You can see in final images how it can look in mix-match with some of the others I'll be listing for sale separately. Look for more and group some. We're really just trying to clear space, and typically these little decorator pillows from antique fragments go fast, particularly at very low prices we're setting.

Very good to excellent condition on this pair - slightly different sizes, but they came to me as a pair and will remain. No odors, no holes, the old panels show age, just as you want it to, but no damage. Really quite beautiful - great palette of colors. The velvet fabric is used on back, and the needlework panel sewn in full, nice sized at 19" x 12". I used to pay a lot for pillows, velvets and trims (if I made them) - still do if/when I get the urge to redecorate. Now the panels I use are all much older, much pricier, and these need to find new homes. A faithful hound in bottom right corner turns away and looks back at the scene with a bone in his mouth - symbolic of a paid breach of loyalty among the Queens people. While it's late 1500s to 1600s in age, the story of the attempt on the life of Queen Margaret of Anjoy, Queen consort of King Henry VI. The story would be mid to late 1400s, and her attacker was 3rd Duke of York, Richard Plantagenist. Stories such as this one played out politically on these wall hangings, depending upon who had commissioned them. The French Queen, governing both England and France as her husband was incapable of doing so, much unrest. I'm unsure if I'm right. Also, in all honesty, I (also you) can't be positive if this is a French Aubusson work of tapestry art, or Flemish verdure. Acquired through a French dealer friend who sold it for a lifelong and well-respected Belgian antiques dealer whose favorite piece was this tapestry, and who only parted with it due to old age and downsizing of living space. He thought it Aubusson. The blue wode dye is still just stunning - surprisingly little fading to the wool yarns. As noted, entirely intact, no weak or open spots, museum worthy with a heavy and recent (few decades) linen backing which has stitches through at intervals to also support and hold the restored large and heavy panel. A full length of 2" Velcro up top makes for easy hanging without lots of hardware installation if you prefer.

Very good to excellent - as fine as one can find after 500 years. There are no weak spots, no open weave, the linen backing is quite recent (50 years or less) and is anchor-stitched through to tapestry at intervals, as is done professionally, to help support the weight of the panel. All wool and silk yarns, hand sheered and spun, dyed, and woven. This would have taken several people a few years to complete. Timeless beauty, available for your own chateau, home, studio. Oh, and no odor! That's vitally important. Very very slight scent of wool, but not a bit of mildew or dust or smoke - it's obviously been cleaned in the professional restoration process.

A note: We were on 1stdibs in it's early opening days, then pulled back. A full 30 1/4" tall, and 20" wide, it is an impressive and elegant cabinet. Photos show that the fronton up top has been attached and braced, which seems original. I feel quite sure the thick glass shelves are not original, and the front edge has been rounded and polished so it is neither unsightly nor dangerous to the touch. The door glass is original and one can see laid glass lines in the old glass. The backing on this one is the very old original, as is the interior veneer on the back of interior (some rippling, which we're doing a glue/clamp improvement on today). I mention it because it is slightly different than #1 cabinet, which lining veneer and back are, we believe, replacements. This is cabinet #2. You are buying one cabinet in this offering.

The system of apprenticeship artisans and craftsman's training is still largely in place in France. Traditionally, a family would enlist their child (usually sons) to work for and learn from a Master cabinetry atelier, understanding it would take years of work and learning to eventually become not just competent, but also a Master, hopefully. The traditions are strong in France. The way these apprentices were tested to see if they'd mastered various levels of the craft was to have them produce scale miniature furniture pieces. From design to completion, even including hardware, this is how a trainee (apprentice) advanced and was given more skill instruction and experience. This is one of those apprentice miniatures. Collectors of antique dolls, in particular, love these, but I do also for the wonderful display pieces they represent. The one you see here is 19th century, and the 3-drawer and desk-shelf chest would be in the era and style noted as "Louis-Philippe", which puts in c.1840s. Simple clean lines, moulding, wood grains and often plain hardware seen here is typical of that aesthetic. It is also a 'test' of the simpler skills, and as such, you see the apprentice has used imperfect wood (I'm certain the old woodworm was there as it was crafted), rougher scrap wood for back and bottom. Very nicely done, dove-tails are tight and trim is nicely milled. The student has signed his work (see back: M 3), possibly meaning 3rd level. It is 13" long, full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent for age and type. Interesting hidden shelf/drawer there at top slides in and becomes part of the moulding in a way rarely found in these - quite creative. The finest makers are TAHAN, Vervelle, Paul Sormani, Alphonse Giroux, maybe a couple of others but of them all, TAHAN is the name plate most sought after, then and still. This is a superb and large tabletop desk, a writer's cabinet or chest, lift top and hinged large writer's slope giving access and storage for writing paper, envelopes, note cards, inkwells (2 remains), pens, nibs, stamps, sealing wax and more - a correspondence dream, these large old chests. We've had some incredible ones through the years, some TAHAN. This is a TAHAN, Paris, cabinet - made to highest standard, the wood veneers are exquisite, the stringing and contrast parquets, cartouche in boulle work with monogram - all aspects of finest quality, and the old dark Royal blue silk velvet writer's surface is the original. All of that said, and noting the lock plate is engraved TAHAN, (maker to the Emperor - which would have been Emperor Napoleon III), this one has some flaws, some evidence of use and long life. But still that elegance and quality survives - just offered here at a reduced price compared to most of these we've had, owing to aspects as noted below.

Good to very good condition, age and type considered. While this began as one of the finest chests possible, it shows signs of age and wear. I've shown detail images of those most notable spots and large photos of the chest from all views for your evaluation. There should be a trim panel across the top of the back of the chest (see image of rear panel), and that trim is missing - sure, not difficult to do a restoration on that, but bears mention. A couple of slightly rough places, notation of 1 inkwell being there though there would have originally been a 2nd. Hinges are all strong and the writing top and inner storage dividers are nicely preserved, yet a corner here of there, or a small rough area keeps it from being excellent (and lots higher in price). These small imperfections do not leap out at you, but we want you to be aware of them as you make your decision. Owning Tahan - a dream. Full measurements are noted on photos - it is large! The pillows are slightly irregular, 17" x 18" plus a trim of fringe to frame the needlework in. A beautiful palette of wood and silk yarns with a versatile neutral ground - florals in a stylized manner reminiscent of the old 17th century French motifs. I would guesstimate the needlework panels to be 19th century, made up as down and feather-fill sofa pillows sometime within the last 40 years. Zippered backs, nice fabric and trim. There is an interesting section of the trim which still has a woven ribbon (about 1 side measurement plus a few inches), which was slightly puzzling until I realized that the claret red fringe is the same trim but the little ribbon has been pulled out. One need only pull the remaining ribbon along that single side of one pillow to have it all fringe passementerie trimmed. I'm going to leave it in, just so you can see what a pretty choice someone made for ribbon-woven trim back when they made these up.

Very good to excellent condition, age and type considered. There are no holes at all, though one notes a few slight snags here or there. I'd guess the panels were once backs on French chairs. The trim and backs and the interior linen pillow forms with the down and feather mix (one or two loose and visible when you unzip the backings) are all in fine condition. There are no odors. I can only point out the need to pull the final ribbon from the crimson passementery/fringe and take a needle and thread to the mitered corner on one pillow's trim to tidy it where it has come loose. Antique and vintage - there are no odors, I see no stains. SO pretty! Ready to use, with just the tuck/sew on that one trim corner. The colors on this one are just fabulous! I've set it with some of my own pillows at home to show how pretty it truly is grouped with needlepoints of 19th century to fine antique 17th century tapestry pillows. I'm sure the yarns are all wool. I think the velvet is likely cotton rather than silk. Nicely made. The vintage to antique woven rough wool tapestry panel used to create this decorator pillow is beautiful, I'd say Victorian to Edwardian era but I'm not expert enough to tell you origin or type in this one. A beautiful palette of wool yarns woven into it, and a suggestion of floral pattern that would suggest it's a fragment of a much larger tapestry. The backing is a pale mauve complimenting cotton velvet without piping or fringe or trim. Back has a zipper, so could be easily taken off of the fabric pillow form inside - either for dry cleaning, or to replace that one with a down filled pillow if you'd prefer.
