Quite an unusual snuff from my collections, this woman is the epitome of c.1814 fashion, centered in Napoleonic era, you see her high bodice Empire gown with lace neckline, a gold buckle at bodice and double gold long chain tucked into her Empire belt, a red coral strand added. Wrapped in a cashmere (Persian) shawl and a couture felted hat, she must have been entering 'society' at this stage and age, probably about 16. A charming and slightly folk art painting capturing a lot of personality in those apprehensive eyebrows and pout of a smile. Youth! Red coral was thought to have protective powers, amulet given to protect young women in particular. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age, more than 200 years ago, a girl in midst of the Napoleonic years, high but tumultuous time in France. The stunning hand carved burl wood snuff is a hinged lift-top in pristine condition, lined in shell, and the portrait still perfectly in place with its original slightly convex cover glass. Closes smoothly and flat, displays beautifully. No hairlines to the painting. A signature and date of 1814 within.
