There are times I wish I were an expert on military uniforms. I'm hoping one of you who is will email me and steer me to a definite British redcoat (red coat) officer's uniform, and if/whether this might be one. The painting and frame are 18th century British, and seem plausible for the American Revolutionary period, which is the information we were given on this one back when he was found. I did purchase this one in the USA, east coast. I look at him, his hair and age of item work for the period, yet it's possible he's simply dressed for a fox hunt? There is no ID nor signature to help me search him out. An excellent little painting of a distinguished gentleman. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent with age and type considered. Last half, 1700s, typical Georgian English frame and mounts. I would point out, as you can more easily see in the greatly enlarged photos of the wafer, there is perhaps a fill or restoration there across the arch of the top of oval, the majority of which disappears when he's in frame. Convex cover glass and the frame remain in fine form for age. Photos show all angles.
