Techincally, this is a vide poche, literally translated as 'empty pocket'. A French necessity by culture, one would remove the jewelry and contents of pocket for the night and deposit to a tray on a bedside table. This one is from last half of 1800s, Victorian or Napoleon III era (c.1850-70) and from the lack of any surface abrasion of use, I'd guess it became someone's souvenir of their Grand Tour. Each miniature plate is 3 1/4" in diameter, and it stands 6 1/2" tall, overall. I can imagine it in service with Z Chocolates, or similar, can't you? Bonbonier, or jewelry tray, you decide. I found it in France.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. There isn't a single scrape on any of the 3 miniature plates. Beautiful hand painted porcelains, each one different but coordinated. The ormolu framework is very slightly off straight, but can quite easily be adjusted. I should have done it before photos. It is strong and has no breaks or weak solders.
