Lovely antique Victorian to Edwardian era Gorham hallmarked sterling silver & cut crystal 4 7/8" wide inkwell with beautifully etched or engraved floral & foliate garland design & ornate monogrammed top! I just love these old sterling & crystal inkwells, the larger often referred to as 'paper weight' inkwells due to their immense size and this one would definitely fall into that category. A bit rougher than most we find, this one does have a chip to the front top right corner, just in front of the pen groove and some scuffing (mostly to base) but don't you just love the engraved garland! The lid is large and fabulous with a scrolling border of flowers and center interlaced monogram. The back of the silver collar with Gorham sterling hallmark and number marking but I don't see a Gorham date mark. Thick & heavy solid crystal body, elegant style and impressive size. A wonderful decorative piece or addition for the inkwell collectors!
Good to very good condition. The chip to the front right corner (top) and possibly a tiny nip or two elsewhere. Also the scuffing and some scratches (noted above and visible in the images. Finally, there is a bit of 'rippling' around the bottom sterling ring (that mounted to the crystal body) so it may have come off and been remounted. See pictures for all measurements.
