A massive pair of unused 19th century needlepoint panels, the length of the 2 is 9 1/2 feet, and width of each is 13 1/2 inches, so lots to work with. Close to 20 feet total. Bolster pillow and 2-3 down-filled sofa or throw pillows - opulently fringed and worked into a silk velvet fabric - absolutely divine! Or use them as framed wall hangings (the pattern works for a vertical hang). Griffen, gryphon, mythical dragons fly amid the colorful pattern. Wonderful palette, the ground color is black, but you could pull that red for your velvet, or cream color to suit your desire. Each panel has about a 3/4" to 1" fold of canvas to the backside, plenty of it to work with in your project and to keep a nice edge. The 9 1/2 foot length is divided, as noted, into 2 sections. Perhaps made for a couple of benches? A Gothic feel to them, likely made and then never used as church pew cushions. RARE to get so much of such a fine decorative needlework fragment!
Very good to excellent condition throughout. My photos show a few threads, there are no missing stitches at all, and no fading of the old wool and silk yarns, either. So rare to find unused panels from c.1850-80 - ready to make up. There is no warp to the needlepoint, they're straight and perfect to work with. I am so tempted to spend a few days with my sewing machine, just making pillows. If only it would snow for a week here in San Diego, huh. These are just in from France. There are no odors of age. A magnificent pair!
