I've always loved these late 1700s to earliest 1800s sets. Over the decades we've had a number of them, some kiln-fired enamel handles, some in banded agate, some in mother of pearl - most thought to be from the Palais Royal shops/boutiques of the old Richelieu Palace. Almost all are missing something. This exceptionally fine one misses nothing at all, and appears never to have been put to use. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, considering age and type. Seems to have been tucked into a chest these 200+ years. No monogram yet engraved on the seal or sceau matrix, not even missing the old pen nip or a cover for the nibs and wax compartments, each with their 18k gold knobs. Elegantly cut opalescent agate handles on all 4 pieces and not a single nick or flaw. The cap on the pen also tests 18k gold, the other trims are 18k gold over .800 silver 'vermeil'. Beautiful niello blade on the letter opener, or page cutter (the actual intended use of the tool). The very sharp-bladed quill knife or scraper-eraser tool seems perfect, as well.
