King Christian 10 of Denmark, 1870 - 1947. Sorgenfri Castle in the background. It's signed "Brock", Gustav Brock was a known miniature painter in Denmark. So we know who we have and who has painted the King's portrait. We do not know from whose estate it has emerged, and only that I found it in France.  My paternal grandfather came to the USA from Denmark with his parents at age 7, in the year 1886, when this King was a Prince of 16 years in age. That palace: Sorgenfri Palace was built by the architect Francois Dieussart in 1705-06 for Carl Count Ahlefeldt. From 1730, this country house was owned by the royal family. I have an ancestral link to a c.1200s Danish Queen, Cristina, and I've been to Denmark, but I didn't see the Sorgenfri Castle. Instead I visited the old Rosenberg Castle in Copenhagen. Magical! But I digress.  This portrait miniature is a magnificent work of art. Look at the incredible fine detail this artist has captured in such a small space. King Christian 10's face is a mere 7/8" from chin to hairline, yet look at those eyes!  Kept perfectly in the original leather presentation case, perhaps it was a gift to family or foreign dignitary. Measurements are noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I find no flaws to note beyond a little age showing to corners on the hunter green leather-clad wood hinged presentation case. Portrait is pristine, signed by the artist, Gustav Brock, who was a noted portrait miniaturist in Denmark, listed. Portraitist to the King - the talent so obvious in this small work of Royal and historical art.
