Shown thus, it's perfect as wall art at home or in your Bru or other antique doll house vignette rooms. A handsome older gentleman, very distinguished and in his blue high-collar jacket that might well be French Revolutionary costume from his youth. Or similarly, there on the window seat and atop the Sferra bedspread on my bed? - You get the idea. And I've still been keep these panels, too. I'm clearing out collected c.1600-1800s French tapestries of 30 years' serious collecting. I pretty much kept the best ones for myself. This is the stash of a very committed antiques dealer. I'm at that stage of life when the word, "downsizing" begins to take on meaning. I realize I will not find the perfect way to put this incredible antique French Aubusson woven tapestry to use. Nope, no more entire home redecorating that will incorporate this panel as a headboard, or a massive bolster pillow. Not going to frame it and hang in in my hunting lodge. This is a magnificent huge Aubusson panel that once graced the back of a very large French canapé, sofa. I have the panel that was upholstery for the seat, too (see it in the final images). I'm offering them separately. This one is a country scene, children and goats, beautiful floral border. The other larger panel (sold separately) is hunt themed, hounds chasing down a large stag. The wool and silk yarns used are delicate in size and so tightly woven, it's a true work of art. Loom arts from the Aubusson factories, long famed in France and throughout the world for their splendor. The panel's background color was once mustard. I've shown the backside so you can see the original yarns. The panel needs a cleaning, though it has no odor, it does have dust of a century, perhaps. I have done nothing to try to clean it. I always intended to use just that rectangular part which isn't darkened so much as the mustard section. That rectangle is 55.5" x 19". The overall panel just as you see it in our photos is 66" x 26" largest, with some cutaways where it was necessary to fit to the large sofa. You'll know the perfect way to put it to use. A nod to need of a cleaning, the overall tapestry panel is strong, worthy of most any project - pillows, a topper for a long bench - bolsters. A few spots you'll put time into with a needle and heavy thread, to close smallish openings in the warp. or fine as it is for framing and hanging, instead. It's a tough one to photograph, so I've shown you the overall panels and then close-ups of the figures. One of my favorite panels of my "stash". It has been stored rolled, archival tissue and cotton. No weakened spots that represent folds. Before I bought it in Paris, it had been on the old furniture it was made for. For shipment, it will be rolled and shipped in a tube for best protection. You might want the other panel. I'm listing them separate since the other panel has a scene with hounds chasing down a large stag, and is versatile of theme apart from this one with a country pastoral scene with 4 people and several goats, a butter churn - a French Romantic image hailing from late 1700s - the time of Boucher, Fragonard, etc.. His work is sold well at auction houses, Christie's and Sotheby's and other international venues, ranging from mid-$50,000 US to the $160,000 ranges, evindenced from past sales. From Artprice, my research shows a most recent selling price in 2013 for one of this artist's canvases, and that sale realized $166,021 hammer, to which the auctioneer's commission would have been added, for a total nearer $180,000. VEZIN is more noted for his Impressionist interiors, and our photos show another similar to the one we have for sale. Rich palette, dreamy impressionistic representation of sumptuous European interiors, creating a mood of serene elegance. The painting we offer is signed by artist, not a copy - an original of the artist's work. Of course we stand behind all our items, particularly something like this one. The painting was reportedly done in 1907, though I do not see that date written on the label nor included in signature. The dress and feel is certainly Belle Epoch, the Golden Age, and 1907 would be right for that. This is an important painting.

We might well deliver this to auction through Christie's or Sotheby's but since our business has been build online, we wanted to offer it here first and give our buyer the benefit of a better price, hopefully, than if it must go to international prestigious auction house clientele. So for a bit we will offer here - don't miss out. As you can see from your own online research, or a posted quick list we've added in our photos spread of this item, the artist is very solidly listed, collected, included in museum collections, exhibited widely in prestigious galleries and inlcuded in many works of literature. Internationally recognized, he was exhibited in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1893, and also studied at the Academy of Dusseldorf, working there in early 1900s, up until his death in 1933 in that city. You will find a more complete biography if you look at a copy of Bénézit edit Gründ 1999, vol 14, page 199. This painting comes out of an important old estate collection (private, name not made public) and has not been previously offered, according to the information we have on this painting. The painting is in a palette with darker colors, green primary to the scene. Contemplative rather than somber, it has a general feeling of serenity. One can frame it to one's taste and decor, though I envision it with a wonderful old wide and elaborate Belle Epoch frame, probably gilded. It is a painting that will need a setting where natural light brings its beauty out, or will need to be lighted in display. The photos were taken without added light, but with a tripod and slow aperture to capture it as well as possible for our viewer. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The oil painting is accomplished on a linen canvas, still on the original stretchers and quite tightly mounted still. You see a handwritten label is partially intact, noting name of sitter, though we can't make it out. Perhaps M. Christrup? noted and (interior). We do not know the artist's name for this painting, sorry. It is without frame, and at 32" x 24", it is a fine representation of the artist's work.

Very little damage to the canvas, though you see a little bit of loss at bottom center which was probably due to the removal of the original frame (which we do not possess). There are no holes in canvas, no rips. You can see our difficulty in photographing to try to minimize glare from the shiny oil painted surface, but you can also see tiny white reflections that are just some dust dots we weren't successful in removing ahead of photographer's work, sorry. The painting is both remarkable and opulently conceived, designed - a testament to the recognized value of this artist's work. Art remains one of the greatest investments and hedge against market decline, remember. This is the finest we've offered to date. Today his works are included in the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Britain in London and other regional centres. Oil on panel, framed in early 1800s original frame made for the painting, the outer measurement is an intimate 9.25" x 7.25". The frame is 17" x 15" and 2.5" in depth, heavy wood with a generous gesso/plaster appliqué which has remained very well intact, few losses. The painting you see is quite typical of this artist's work and subject, and represents a fine investment painting that is sure to become a favorite. The demure size draws you in close to enjoy the splendid detail of Collins' subject, tenderness and remarkably adept brush. The charming portrait of an early 1800s English childhood, the boys play at getting their small sailboat to set off in the tide pools of a low-tide seaside somewhere in England. What could be more endearing in subject, composition and execution.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. This means it is done by those studying with and/or working under that famed artist. The painting is identified as Mme Marie-Louise Boucher (or perhaps Bouchet), Dame Boutron, and has the added charm of her holding up a paper upon which is noted that it is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of her marriage to M. Boutron. This lovely older woman lived just one year more, after her portrait was done, and we know she was born in 1733, died in April, 1804. I know little else about her. The marriage commemorated is dated in her letter, too, and is noted as 13, September, 1753 (1803 on painting, but that is the 50th anniversary). Also noted is that the celebration or the marriage (not sure which) was under the seal of St. Eustache, that wonderful old church I love in Paris. One could certainly learn more about this woman and her story with the clues given us in the painting. Elegantly accomplished, I'm a bit in love with this Grand Dame. She sits in a fabulous French Empire Directoir chair and wears the distinguished gown of a stylish matron of her time. Napoleon was in ascent, along with the French Empire, so she's been taken from a very large Empire frame (sadly) which has probably been remounted with a big mirror for some chic Paris apartment. But even without her original frame, she's marvelous. Ready to frame or to hang just as you see her. I like these unframed if shown in contemporary decor, and with or without frame in traditional to Empire interiors. Again, This painting is 36.5" x 29" and the depth of the old wood stretcher is 1". Some light surface crazing to the old oil painting, particularly to the upper and left of her bonnet facing us. Those stitches on the faces of the figures are less than 1mm each, and even the larger stitches on the panel are smaller than petitpoint items done today. The work you see is one panel of a pair we bought recently out of France, (each sold separately), and represents, we think, Mary praying at the tomb of Jesus. The detail and rich colors in silk and wool yarns is remarkable - Louis XIV or perhaps even earlier, dating 1600s to perhaps earliest 1700s, it is one of the earliest needlework items we've offered that is complete, undamaged and ready to frame and hang. No, you wouldn't want to turn this one into pillowtops, I think it would be too fragile for that, but it's superb on the stretchers we've found it on and will be a favorite of anyone who collects needle arts, women's art, certainly for its age and fine composition and delivery. I can't begin to imagine how long this would have taken to complete but I can tell you it could well be a life's work in this and its companion panel (sold separately). Born the lowest of commoners, she became the consort of the future Roman Emperor Constantius Chlorus (reigned 293-306) and the mother of the future Emperor Constantine the Great (reigned 306-337). She ranks as an important figure in the history of Christianity and of the world due to her influence on her son. In her final years, she made a religious tour of Syria Palaestina and Jerusalem, during which she allegedly discovered the True Cross. Some also associate her with the foundation of the Vatican Gardens. Constantine was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. Although he lived most of his life as a pagan, he joined the Christian faith on his death bed, being baptised by Eusebius of Nicomedia. He played an influential role in the proclamation of the Edict of Milan in 313, which declared religious tolerance for Christianity in the Roman empire. He called the First Council of Nicaea in 325 that produced the statement of Christian belief known as the Nicene Creed. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built on his orders at the purported site of Jesus' tomb in Jerusalem and became the holiest place in Christendom. The Papal claim to temporal power in the High Middle Ages was based on the supposed Donation of Constantine. He is venerated as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Church. He has historically been referred to as the "First Christian Emperor," and he did heavily promote the Christian Church. There is a hand written inscription on the paper back of the frame, dated 1919 though we're not sure if that's when the piece was actually created. There is also text on the back of the chromalith and we have enlarged pictures of it (front and back). A fabulous decorative piece, perfect for the collectors so don't miss it.

Very good condition, age and materials considered. Elegant kitchen painting, really - early 19th century oil painting, a sporting scene with the hunt theme typically referred to as "nature morte", a still life with dead game, fowl, the day's dinner. These type of paintings are like little prayers of thanks for the plentiful bounty of the hunt, and yet often show just a couple of small dead birds, humble and yet still a prayer of thanks. It's there on the inner lip of the bottom half, where it closed into the upper hinged top portion, and it's a small profile mark that guarantees it as a .800/1000 purity of silver, made in France between 1818-1838. It is in the earlier style favored by Marie-Antoinette, and developed by the brothers Martin, which was a method of layering paint and varnish to get a depth of image and for decorative objects like this one. Your visit to Versailles might have been your first experience with such decorative style, and it's there en masse in the rooms mid-late 1700s, from large wall panels to small vanity items. The style has come to be known as Vernis Martin. The eventual darkening of the varnish usually has given this vibrantly colorful painting style a warmth in yellowing and you can see that result in this lovely small item. The outer wrapping is probably leather, most likely fine shagreen (skin of sting ray) based on the age of this one. And it is the leather that holds the painting. The item is an etui (small case) or "necessaire" which item would hold items necessary such as the note card that is still in place within this one. The painting is styled after, I believe, a c.1760 painting of her by Guillaume VOIRIOT, which was called "Femme a' sa Toilette". I've included a couple of views of Mme de Montesson, the combination of which may have been the source. She wears the same outfit and holds a book in this painting as she wore for M. Voiriot's painting, though her post is not the same. For those who collect French historical figures in their own portrait gallery, she's a must have. The painting is nicely accomplished and as you can see from our images, on a thin natural wafer that still has the old original vellum backing, though it's no longer adhered to the wafer. The painting is lovely, pensively posed, she seems to be contemplating the words in the book or letter, certainly one from her lover, the Duc d'Orleans. Duc d'Orleans was a title reserved for French royalty, first created during the 14th century. Known as princes of the blood (princes du sang), the title of Duke of Orleans was given, when available, to the oldest brother of the king. Thus, they formed a collateral line of the French royal family, with an eventual right to succeed to the throne should more senior princes of the blood die out. The one associated with this mistress was born in the Palace of Versailles in 1725 (May 12) and he became France's King Louis-Philippe II, and reigned in the turbulant point in French history, 1785-1793, upon which time he was replaced by Louis-Philippe III, who was King of France from 1793 and reigned until 1830. There was a rather short period in time when early photographers were being innovative, following Daguerre's invention of the first form of photography in 1839, "daguerreotype", which consisted of a single one-of-a-kind image in emulsion on silver layer on a copper or silver plate - very fragile and extremely clear and crisp, it rendered the portrait miniature industry superfluous, really. It was soon followed by the next big thing: an emulsion on glass, creating the ambrotype, then after that the tintype which, by mid-1860s was affordable enough to reach the masses. By the 1870s, they were producing paper photographs mounted on card backings that are known as cabinet cards, which followed the first paper photograph, the "carte de visit", c.1865. So by the time this photographer was transferring emulsion onto an enamel base and kiln-firing it to produce these enamel plaques, the photographical industry was in full bloom and very exciting. The first of this type I'd ever seen were small enamel photos mounted on gravestones - not worn a bit by the weather, and holding up just fine (if a little haunting) on gravestones that were showing their age and sometimes crumbling. With interest, then, I do buy all of these I find that are not graveyard or tombstone mounted, and this exceptionally fine 1/2 plate (extra large) enamel photo from Paris, is the crowning glory of the collection I once amassed. The photographer's written his dedication in the enamel on backside of this convex copper plaque, so we know it was Emile Bondonneau, whose shop was a 10 Bd. Montmartre, PARIS. And that it was done in 1878. We don't, however, know who the woman is whose image is so beautifully captured here. She looks like Empress Eugenie, don't you agree? And perhaps if I put more time to it, I'd find it actually is the wife of France's last Emperor, Napoleon III. Soulful eyes under dramatic brows and all those Empire curls cascading, she's one of the finest little paintings ever. I do not find a signature, but surely one of the listed portraitists of her time. I haven't taken the locket frame apart to get a scan which would show you how much more fine detail this painting has than our digital images show. Painted in vignette, the canvas is open and unpainted beyond an oval, so meant for this original frame that comes with it. The frame and painting each are of high appeal and quality, and each have evidence of their advanced age. Frame shows a few losses (view our images to assess) but not bad for its era. The painting has a few old restorations, most notable a long one there near the top of the oval. It traverses the aperture, has been restored and isn't too distracting but I want to bring your attention to it as you make your decision. I love this one just as it is. The jewelry and the woman's dramatic profile, the elegance of the artist's talented capture of her throughout - these things rise to the forefront. Using light like Rembrandt, I wish we knew the artist for this fine painting! That said, I will also point to the slight strangeness that is at her nose. I don't know if that represents the original state, or if someone has done some little attempt at restoration or if one is needed, but there is a little imperfection to note. She's a shoe-in for a subject that would have been appealing to Manet, don't you agree? I did not have the hammer price on those. Add to these, the buyer's premium, and you see where these are. Such exquisite care and detail, and a stunning result on all three of these precious miniatures. One family, grandmother, child of about 3-4, and mother. Incredible detail to these small portraits, which is all the more amazing if you realize the faces are each an inch from chin to hairline. I'm thrilled to have them in my collection, and to offer them to you, our wonderful customers.

Very good to excellent for age and type. The old original frame is silk velvet covered and has suffering loss of nap in 140 years, loss of the back easel stand (it's probably been hung instead, both hanging loops are intact, still). The center painting of the little girl has a hairline visible from certain angles (we've captured it for your review). Each of the paintings is just stunning in their quality, museum pieces, all. Nothing to report as flaw but that partial fine hairline. The others are pristine. Oval brass frames have original slightly convex and highly polished cover glass, original. I wish we had the family's identity. I'll sleuth a bit more. Perhaps the wife and daughter, granddaughter of the artist? One could hope! Yes, they could be removed from the original frame, which shows age, but you have the artist's signature within, so please keep together, should you decide to buy the 3. Of course they are not separable, need to be together always and will remain just as they are. Measurements in full can be found on our photos.

NOTE: I had huge images of each one, and somehow lost them in processing. Will do them again and add, but wanted to get them listed tonight. Come back - you will not believe the magnificent French Impressionist works of art they truly are.

Antique Dieppe, France, Carved Ivory Aide d' Memoire, Nécessaire with Stylus. She was Maria L. Dickenson. We don't know how old she was, but the work is done in very tiny and elegant stitches and would indicate she was over 10 years old. Girls in that time were not taught reading or math, but were taught lady's arts like embroidery, sewing, clothing, manners, music, voice.
