Rectangular form with richly figured burled walnut or possibly birdseye maple veneers, elaborate gilt metal rosette themed strap mounts and applied classical two-tone silver & gold profile medallions. The main, larger central figural medallion appears to be that of Minerva. Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, is commonly depicted in 19th century decorative arts wearing a helmet, sometimes with a prominent crest and classical armor. The interior of the box in finished rosewood, more common in a documents box as gloves caskets were normally fabric (satin or moire silk) lined. A truly visually stunning box, a fabulous decorative accent!

Very good condition, age & materials considered. The one main notable flaw is a repair to the rear lid corner. Apparently there was a split or break at the lid and rear that's attached to the hinges. Restored but still evident on closer inspection. The brass cone shaped feet are also later restorations. All original hardware & lock but no key. See images for all measurements.

https://antiques-uncommon-treasure.com/zh/products/antique-french-napoleon-iii-burled-document-or-gloves-casket-ornate-box-with-brass-strips-figural-medallions
