Wasn't he a handsome man! A personal portrait dating c.1820-30s from the fashion and hair style, perhaps it was a portrait made for a bride, or a lover. The large brooch mount tests 12k gold, so there is a chance he is English rather than French, and I'll leave that open. His portrait was found in France and he's been in my own collection for decades. He does not come with that box, and it is perhaps 40 years newer than the old painting and brooch, but it is shown to give an idea of how it might have been presented or preserved. Full measurements of the portrait in brooch mount are noted on our photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Not even that fine beveled cover glass has a nip to show for the 200 years, and there really are no dents or dings nor much evidence it's been anything but well-treasured. Hinged finback, c-clamp, oyster shaped, as you can see. Stunning portrait - his face is only about 1", total, and has so much detail and personality, you feel as if you'd recognize him and/or his heirs. But we have no history of who he was, and the portrait is not signed. Locket brooch opens from the front and is not quite 2" in height.
