Rare antique likely circa 1750-1850 heavy brass or gilt bronze pocket compass with folding sundial or gnomon and in superb condition! Heavy, this one is just under one lb at 12.6oz. Recently polished to a high gold though we know some collectors prefer them left as found (this is the 'as found' state for us). We realize that these were made for years and years, some reproductions out there so, if any of you compass experts out there can shed any light on this one, either age or origins or both, we'd love to hear from you. The Maritimers' Museum & Park website shows a nearly identical one on their site, stating its of English origins and dates from 1780-1820. Very interesting piece, great just as a decorative accent of course!
